Gia is one of my favorite kinds of dark-romance heroines because her strength doesn’t require her to behave as though nothing frightens or hurts her.

She’s exhausted. She’s grieving. She’s watching her mother disappear piece by piece. She also works for a man who seems to consider tormenting her an enjoyable workplace activity. Yet Gia remains remarkably difficult to break.

Her loyalty to her mother is the emotional center of the book. Almost everything she agrees to endure becomes understandable once you recognize what she’s trying to save.

That doesn’t make her helpless. Gia negotiates. She pushes back. She sets conditions. She understands exactly what Tate is doing and refuses to romanticize the bargain simply because she’s attracted to him.

That’s important. Gia doesn’t mistake Tate’s obsession for goodness. She sees him clearly and makes decisions with that knowledge. Her intelligence also becomes one of the reasons Tate can’t dismiss her. Submission would bore him. Gia’s refusal to give it to him becomes irresistible.

Tate is not a morally gray hero. He’s much closer to morally black. That distinction matters because Handsome Devil doesn’t spend hundreds of pages insisting that a fundamentally decent man is simply misunderstood.

He’s calculating, obsessive, manipulative, vindictive, and frighteningly comfortable with violence. His official point-of-view description doesn’t even pretend otherwise. Shen introduces his fixation on Gia alongside a revenge campaign that eventually ignites a mafia war.

What makes Tate interesting isn’t discovering that he’s secretly nice. It’s discovering that he can become emotionally attached without becoming someone else. Gia creates a vulnerability he never intended to have.

That terrifies him far more than attraction does. Tate understands money. He understands leverage. He understands fear. He understands how to destroy people. What he doesn’t understand nearly as well is needing another human being.

Watching him confront that weakness becomes one of the strongest parts of the novel.

Gia’s mother, Telma, is enormously important even though she isn’t part of the central romance. She suffers from early-onset dementia, which has progressed significantly by the events of the novel. Her condition is the reason Gia is willing to make a deal with Tate in the first place.

Telma represents Gia’s last connection to the family she’s already lost. That gives the marriage arrangement emotional weight far beyond money. Gia isn’t agreeing because she wants luxury.

She’s agreeing because grief makes hope incredibly difficult to abandon, even when that hope comes with an unbearable price. The scenes surrounding her mother’s decline were some of the hardest parts of the book for me.

They also keep Gia grounded emotionally while the rest of the plot becomes increasingly extreme.

Tate’s Father and His Need for Revenge

Revenge is just as important to Tate’s character as his obsession with Gia. His past has taught him to understand love, loyalty, and violence through a deeply warped framework. Instead of processing grief conventionally, he turns it into something actionable.

Someone caused pain. Someone must pay. That logic eventually pulls him into conflict with organized crime and gives the book its mafia element.

The interesting part is what happens when Gia becomes part of Tate’s calculations. Revenge is easy when you believe your own life is disposable. It’s considerably more complicated once someone else’s life matters more.

Gia can refuse. But refusing may mean losing the opportunity to help her mother. That’s one of the darkest aspects of the romance.

It also creates one of the novel’s most interesting questions: How meaningful is a choice when one option carries an unbearable cost? The book doesn’t need a simple answer.

Very. This is an explicit dark romance, not a closed-door or moderately spicy book.

I wouldn’t really describe Tate’s arc as redemption.

That word suggests a moral transformation I don’t think the book is particularly interested in delivering.

Tate doesn’t become good.

He begins recognizing that Gia matters to him in ways no one else does. Her safety becomes important. Her opinion begins affecting him. Her pain creates reactions he didn’t expect to experience.

Now there’s someone he intends to protect.

That may not make Tate morally better.

It does make him more human.

A dark romance built around blackmail could easily reduce the heroine to someone things simply happen to.

Gia refuses to allow that. She may not have equal money. She doesn’t possess Tate’s social power. She certainly doesn’t command his capacity for violence. But she has something Tate can’t easily manufacture or purchase.

Boundaries. Gia continually forces him to acknowledge that marriage hasn’t erased her right to make decisions.

She negotiates the terms of their arrangement.

She challenges him. She refuses to worship him. She remains herself inside a relationship designed around an enormous imbalance.

That’s why I never felt as though Tate swallowed the entire book.

He may dominate almost every room he enters.

Gia still occupies her own space.

What I Loved About Handsome Devil

The darkness worked for me because the story doesn’t pretend it isn’t dark. Tate’s behavior isn’t dressed up as harmless teasing.

The marriage arrangement isn’t presented as an adorable excuse for forced proximity.

The mafia violence isn’t clean. Gia’s mother’s dementia isn’t merely a convenient device used to push her toward the hero.

Everything carries consequences. I especially loved Gia. She has every reason to collapse under the weight she’s carrying, but Shen doesn’t write her resilience as invulnerability.

Gia hurts. She grieves. She makes compromises.

She sometimes accepts choices she hates because adulthood doesn’t always offer a clean alternative.

That makes her feel much more real than a heroine who can simply out-sass every problem. Tate fascinated me for entirely different reasons. Getting inside his head is uncomfortable.

It should be. His emotional development works because Shen never suddenly rewrites his personality to make his relationship easier to approve of.

He remains Tate. He simply discovers that Gia has become the one variable he can’t treat as disposable.

The Dementia Storyline Gives the Book Its Heart

For all the mafia violence, revenge, obsessive behavior, and sexual intensity, Gia’s relationship with her mother may be the most emotionally devastating part of the novel.

Telma’s dementia gives Gia’s choices context. It also creates a type of helplessness Tate can’t easily solve. Money can create access. Influence can open doors. Tate can intimidate almost anyone.

None of that means he can command a degenerative illness to reverse itself. That’s significant for a character whose worldview is built around control.

Gia already understands that loving someone doesn’t guarantee you can save them.

Tate has to learn it.

Those scenes give the story an emotional vulnerability that prevents the darker plot from becoming pure spectacle.

What Might Not Work for Every Reader

This book won’t work for every dark-romance reader, and I don’t think it’s trying to. Tate’s treatment of Gia is deliberately extreme. He manipulates her.

He exploits her vulnerability. He has enormous economic and professional power over her.

The marriage begins through blackmail. Readers who need the hero’s behavior to remain within conventional romantic boundaries are probably going to hate him.

He’s attractive because he’s anything but harmless, and somehow Gia becomes the one person capable of making that dangerous man care what happens next.

Handsome Devil is not a romance that asks you to approve of everything happening inside it.

That’s one of its strengths. Tatum Blackthorn is controlling, manipulative, obsessive, violent, and capable of astonishing cruelty.

Gia Bennett knows this. She marries him anyway. But context matters.

She doesn’t walk down the aisle because Tate wins her over with flowers and billionaire charm. She makes a brutal calculation involving the woman she loves most in the world.

Her mother might have a chance. Gia knows what Tate wants in return. So she makes the deal. That foundation creates an uncomfortable romance because it should be uncomfortable.

The fascinating part is what happens afterward. Tate begins believing Gia is something he owns. Then he discovers she’s someone he needs. Those aren’t the same thing.

Gia, meanwhile, refuses to let marriage erase the person she was before it. She pushes, negotiates, defies, argues, and forces Tate into an experience he has spent most of his life avoiding.

Connection. I don’t think Gia turns Tate into a good man. I think she makes him care. For Tate, that may be the more radical transformation.

His revenge becomes more dangerous once he has something to lose. His enemies become more threatening once they realize Gia matters. That’s where the romance becomes compelling for me. Not redemption. Vulnerability.

And Gia’s story works because she never disappears inside his.

Her devotion to her mother, her intelligence, her anger, her moral boundaries, and her stubborn refusal to surrender her identity keep her from becoming merely the woman who changes the monster.

Tate changes because Gia refuses to become whatever he expected her to be.

Handsome Devil is violent, explicit, morally uncomfortable, obsessive, and at times genuinely disturbing.

It’s also emotionally sharper than I expected. For me, it’s the darkest entry in the Forbidden Love series because it doesn’t merely flirt with the idea that love can be dangerous.

It builds the entire romance inside that danger and asks what happens when two people decide to stay there anyway.

On paper, Dylan Casablancas and Rhyland Coltridge should be able to handle this. He needs to convince an important business contact that he’s stable enough to be husband material, while Dylan needs someone convincing enough to make her clingy ex understand that she has moved on. Unfortunately, they also have to spend time together.

That would be easier if the hostility between them weren’t carrying an enormous amount of attraction underneath it. For me, that’s where Wildest Dreams works best. L.J. Living so close to each other creates an intimacy neither anticipated. The insults and sarcastic exchanges keep coming, but so do moments where Rhyland sees the exhausted mother beneath Dylan’s defenses and Dylan begins noticing that the selfish playboy she thought she understood is capable of showing up in ways she never expected.

Gravity complicates everything further.

Rhyland isn’t simply getting involved with Dylan. Loving a single mother means understanding that her daughter isn’t an obstacle to the relationship or a separate part of Dylan’s life that can be conveniently ignored.

The more comfortable Rhyland becomes inside their little family, the harder it becomes to keep insisting that anything between them is pretend.

The characters are the strongest part of Wildest Dreams for me because both Dylan and Rhyland are allowed to be difficult in completely different ways. Neither needs to be reduced to the sensible heroine and irresponsible playboy long enough for the romance to work, because Shen allows their contradictions to remain visible even while they’re falling for each other.

Dylan’s responsibilities have taught her to guard what little stability she has, while Rhyland’s lifestyle has taught him to guard his freedom. Their conflict works because both characters believe they’re protecting something essential, even when those defenses are keeping them from recognizing what they actually want.

Dylan is a 26-year-old single mother who has spent enough time being disappointed by other people that self-reliance has become almost inseparable from her identity. Her daughter, Gravity, is the center of her world, and every romantic decision has to pass through the question of whether it makes their lives safer, easier, or more complicated.

That gives Dylan’s resistance to Rhyland much more weight than a simple enemies-to-lovers setup. She isn’t merely afraid that her brother will disapprove or that getting involved with his best friend could become awkward. She has a child depending on her, and reckless romantic choices no longer affect only Dylan.

I especially liked that motherhood doesn’t erase her sexuality or frustration. Dylan loves Gravity completely, but that doesn’t mean she stops wanting things for herself, resenting the weight she carries, or wondering what her life might look like if responsibility didn’t have to come first every single time.

Those conflicting emotions make her feel human.

Dylan can adore her daughter and still be tired. She can be fiercely independent and still secretly wish someone else would carry part of the load. She can know Rhyland is probably a terrible idea and still want him.

That messiness is one of her greatest strengths as a character.
